Talk:Bnei Israel
Is this the same as Benai Israel? -- Djinn112 00:04, Feb 15, 2004 (UTC)
This page has a whole buncha problems......
- the author claims that the ethnic group's history for the last 1500 years is well known, but claims decent from Nebucanezzer's enslavement of the Jews in 500 BC, 2500 years ago.
- The documentary sources cited at the bottom in the external links cite islamic sources dating from the 1600's.
- Archeological evidence dates from the 1000's to 1100's.
- There is documentary evidence that the Jewish cultural identity in Afghanistan may derive from a massive immigration of jews from Persion in the 700's.
- Despite the author's claims, the Qur'an does NOT identify the afghan ethnic group as the lost tribes of Israel.
But I'm reluctant to start an edit war by putting that into the article. Rick Boatright 06:10, 8 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Well, as I suspected, the other writer is deleting the western historical viewpoints and is insisting that the Qur'an supports the Pathan's claim to be the lost tribes of Israel. However, a quick read of Surah 17 shows that there is no such claim in there. There just isn't. He also edited to add that archeological evidence supports the claim, but I can find no such source. So, I merged his new text, and put the western historical information back in. Rick Boatright 23:19, 19 Mar 2004 (UTC)
edit deleting Quran Surah description
[edit]Without wanting to start an edit war... why delete the quran sura desription? It's no less important than the chapters of the bible headings -- ok, nevermind, I'll break it out with a disabiguification link. Rick Boatright 07:46, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Consolidation
[edit]We really need to consolidate Bnai Israel, Bnai Yisrael (there should be a redirect), Bani Israel and Children of Israel.
And yes, there should be discussion of how they are referred to in the Qur'an. Not to state the obvious, but as a reminder, this is an encyclopedia, right?—iFaqeer | Talk to me! 20:22, Oct 5, 2004 (UTC)
This page ought to be merged
[edit]We ought to merge this page with Children of Israel--Josiah 15:25, 15 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Bnai Israel vs Bnei Yisrael
[edit]The page is called "Bnai Israel". I do not believe that this is either English, Hebrew, Arabic, Greek, or Latin (and its Romance derivatives). What language is this term? If it is supposed to be Hebrew, I would have expected to see "Bnei Yisrael" perhaps with additional marks to indicate letters that the English alphabet lacks (stops of various sorts).
Can someone explain the name or can we rename it to be a more reasonable transliteration into English? 69.138.236.221 22:35, 25 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Well maybe we need to add more alternative spellings, then. And, if folks more knowledgeable than you or I about this topic think it more appropriate, we can move the main article to whatever is best. See, for example, B'nai Brith.—iFaqeer (Talk to me!) 11:12, Nov 26, 2004 (UTC)
- more knowledgeable than you or I ? I dont know how many or how well you know languages. I am surprised that you would make assumptions regarding my knowledge. I will admit readily that Syriac is my weakest language. 69.138.236.221 12:09, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)
