Active Worlds on linux
[edit]I have done some research and it seems that the information about Active Worlds running on Wine for Linux is false. Active Worlds does not normally run on Wine; it only runs under very specific circumstances, ones that I cannot seem to replictate. --71.234.231.129 (talk) 23:57, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

A citizen is always granted access to a public world. If a user gets banned from AW, that person is no longer a citizen (unless until unbanned), so therefore that "grant" of access no longer applies to them, meaning that line on the page is correct and no reason to change it. --AlexTheMartian | Talk 07:08, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit]How is the spacing in the name? Is it Active Worlds or ActiveWorlds, is it AlphaWorld or Alpha World?

- "Active Worlds" and "AlphaWorld", though the company (which has gone through several name changes over the years, has gotten "Active Worlds" confused with "ActiveWorlds" and "Activeworlds"--but then they've gotten a LOT of things confused, which is why AW's stagnated for as long as it has... 4.1 SDK Documentation
[edit]When I follow the link for SDK documentation at the Active Worlds site (http://www.activeworlds.com/sdk/}, I get pointed to the download site for the 3.6 (build 41). I've misplaced the link to where I got the current 4.1 SDK, but ran across an Active Worlds Wiki, which is also MIA <sigh!>

[edit]We really gotta update this page, there is information thats totally wrong, and information thats just way outdated. I already fixed one error I noticed, someone listed AWTeen as not being owned by AWI, I changed that.

- I would hardly say that most of the Wikipedia editors are AW cits (although that probably does apply to the ones who have made contributions to this article and discussion page); more likely, most have never even heard of it. OTOH, most of us who are cits spend our time working on other projects. (I'm spending about half my time on WP:AFD reviews.) So, if you want a new screenshot, upload one and change the link ... that's how the Wiki works! I have no problem updating this article, I am an active AW user and an active Wikipedia user, I been a Wikipedia user since 2004, and an AW user since 2001. Heck, I even been watching and updating this article since 2004, but it was SW Comit that started this article 2 months before I started contributing, sadly I don't have that honor, lol. Removed User Comments section
[edit]I have removed the section "User Comments", as it is a perfect example of what Wikipedia is not. I am not the final expert (merely being bold) on such matters, so of course this is open to discussion. Below is the text that I cut:

Removing Wikia external link

User:Starheart I removed it under the links to universes, SL is not an AW universe, but can be an external link as it is another 3D virtual system, so I left it in that section.

To what extend are external links added? Only the ones that are well known? Or try to have a complete list of all universes?
Does the current subscription price have to be included? I don't think its relevent, pricing is not usually quoted in other Wikipedia articles.
Advertising? I think not.

- no no no, it says "This article or section is written like an advertisement." so it is not marked for the program having advertising, it is the other way around, to some people on Wikipedia, this activeworlds article is looking like just one big advertisement for activeworlds, instead it needs to look more like a normal encyclopedia article. MMOG
[edit]Is AW a game? No. Please remove, I won't for fear of it being disputed. It's not a game.
- I removed "Mode(s) Massive Multiplayer Online Game" as well as "Ratings G+", becuase 1. It is not a game, and 2. I believe G+ can be misleading. Unnecessary line

History
[edit]One of the events I remember clearly, which is not mentioned in the history as far as I can see, was when Alphaworld was closed down for public editing. As I recall they had been trying to make a profit by selling private worlds, but when this didn't succeed (people prefered the world where all the others were, and that was open), they demoted all non-registered users to just one ugly avatar and no building. I wonder if it was around the same time they tore down most of the buildings around ground zero, replacing them with their own, and thus offend many of the early adopters.
Am I the only one to remember this? For me, AW was something that was the rage around 1997, and then promptly vanished into obscurity, but the history (and this page in general) seems to be from the perspective of the company only.
It has been proven, and myself saw it, that Active Worlds is a but taken over by Gor lifestylers. Some game masters are Gorean and beginners tend to be 'welcomed' to Gor. I would like to remind them this should be but a bedroom game and that if their fisaco could end it would be nice. Being rather noob to AW, I DON'T see myself redirecte to Gor worlds (in fact there I couldn't even find any notice to them except in Worlds list). On teleport to Gor worlds they asks you to either say date of birth or age(or both). And almost all of them are X rated. This is more than enough I think (and anyway, in SecondLife there is much more Gorean(and general BDSM) content) anyway. Vikarti anatra (talk) 09:09, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Regarding Citizen Section
[edit]The last two bullet points under the citizen section seem to be contradicting each other or describing the same service in different ways and is confusing. Is a Personalized Avatar the same as a Customizable Avatar? And does it charge once, or with each change?
-Citizens can opt to have a Personalized Avatar, one that follows them from world to world. Personalized Avatars (also called PAV) cost $19.99 for the first time, as well as each change thereafter. Unlike Customizable Avatars, PAVs are required to be modeled by a third party before a citizen can use them.
-Citizens are allowed a Customizable Avatar (or CAV), and are able to make changes to it for no charge. This feature was added in version 4.2.

Should this be stubbed?
[edit]Any reason this article in its current form shouldn't be reduced to a stub. There are no reliable sources here that I can see. Most of the sources are primary, links to self-published websites, or non-reliable websites (some of which are off line). AniMate 05:07, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- There is a lot of history here. Just because Active Worlds doesn't have the current amount of publicity that competitors like Second Life has doesn't mean it's not notable. Active Worlds was the first large scale 3D virtual world. I think that's notable enough. Instead of removing most of the content and reducing it to a stub, why not contribute and find reliable sources? One of the obvious goals of Wikipedia is to reduce articles that are stubs, not to maximize the number of them. - Let's be honest here. Most of this stuff hasn't ever been written about in reliable third party sources. People involved in online communities often think every aspect of them is encyclopedic. They aren't. Unless someone outside of Active Worlds has written about all of these "fascinating" details, we can and should remove them. I'm searching, but I'm not finding anything. I urge you to look for actual reliable sources, because the reference section on this article is a disgrace. I'm not going to start deleting things right now, but I'll likely start very soon. Tag removal
[edit]Please don't remove the tags on this article. Currently the only sourced section in this article is the "History" section. Prototype of Second Life
[edit]Heya! Second Life originated as a ripoff of this one!!! AW is semi-maintained, with only basic "for today's Windows" upkeep (or maybe not even that). Second Life, originating as a ripoff, became x-platform and o-src, got more capacities... Hey, it even got a better mouse mode! Redirect changed
[edit]Outer Worlds used to redirect to this page. I changed it to The Outer Worlds because this Active Worlds article doesn't use the phrase "Outer Worlds" and neither do any of the cited sources.
It does look like there is a virtual chatroom named OuterWorlds which is an offshoot of the virtual chatroom Active Worlds. However, I haven't found any reliable independent sources that talk about this. WanderingWanda (talk) 18:21, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
- Hey, I used to play Outer Worlds in 1999-2002.
- It was almost identical to Active Worlds - same browser/chat layout, many identical building assets, but fewer of them and many were more simple models with less positioning controls. Same system of Tourists, Citizens and world Licenses.
- I was only aged 9-12 so I didn't understand why there were two (AW and OW), but the adults on OW seemed to like the smaller community there. Doblica (talk) 12:28, 7 April 2023 (UTC)
