Good point! and it absolutely was not a comedy. It was one of the first series in USSR, or more accurate translation from Russian "multi-episode film", not a "soap opera". The point is that it was made in a very serious frame of mind, it was a masterpiece of style and consistency.

Sometimes it was frightening(what else to expect in Nazi Germany), in fact the whole film is a big "Fear Factor" game for the main character, he manages to keep a cool mind in absolutely desperate circumstances. And the jokes appeared because the movie was popular, and most of them is based on contrast of the film content and something said, I guess it's called bathos.
