- 1828 – Pennsylvania's first state-owned railway, the Philadelphia and Columbia Railway, is authorized by the state legislature.[1]
- 1875 – The Mayor of Los Angeles, California, approves a measure to allow the Spring and Sixth Street Railroad, a predecessor of the Pacific Electric Railway, to extend its line to connect to the Southern Pacific Railroad train station.[2]
- 1900 – Mayor of New York Robert A. Van Wyck turns the first shovel of dirt in groundbreaking ceremonies for the first subway line in the city.[1]
- 1970 – The last California Zephyr operated by Western Pacific Railroad (pictured with crew) arrives in Oakland, California.
