How Chapelle was killed
[edit]Chapelle was not killed by landmine. she was killed when on patrol with a marine platoon, the lieutenant in front of her kicked a tripwire boobytrap consisting of a mortar shell with a hand grenade attached to the top of it. a piece of shrapnel hit her in the neck, (which you can see in the photo)and died soon after - hence the impromptu medical attention and photo opportunity. I'd put this in but have no cites and am no good at editing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.229.197.254 (talk • contribs) 09:26, January 7, 2007
- A comment on the History (TV channel) web site from an eye-witness describes a slightly different scenario. Regardless, the article needs a citation for what it says. --Jtir (talk) 18:49, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
Intelligence links
[edit]When captured in Hungary she supposedly had a minox spy camera and plenty of film taped to her body. This, combined with her involvement with the Sea Swallows, the American censorship of her Vietnam work and other indications, has caused many to question Chapelle's links with intelligence services. Anyone with a good reference on this? --rxnd (talk) 02:51, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
- The Minox is not indicative of involvement with spy services.(even 'I' have a minox spy camera) She was merely trying to sneak the camera in so she could take her pictures of the shady group that had been smuggling people out of the country. Indeed she had the minox and film taped to her body with band-aids and when she was arrested she managed to dump it out a window (Fire in the Wind. page 203) I doubt she was any more involved with spooks than any other journalist who travels into places you really shouldn't. I am re-reading both books in order to expand this article significantly. EraserGirl (talk) 03:05, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the answer. Looking forward to your updates to the article. --rxnd (talk) 17:21, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
- So do I, I have 2 articles in front of it, but I may skip ahead to hers. I haven't reread her autobiography in a long time and I am interested to compare it to Fire in the Wind. EraserGirl (talk) 02:45, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
