[edit]Only old sources like Gibbon seem to add the "Verus", probably confusing with his son, so I'm following OCD in going with "Lucius Aelius" (the "Caesar" being a title and not part of personal name). Stan 20:15, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)
- Stan is right; the cognomen Verus was never attested for this L. Ceionius Commodus outside the Historia Augusta. The correct form of his name, from birth to adoption, is Lucius Ceionius Commodus; from his adoption by Hadrian, he was called Lucius Aelius Caesar. The Loeb edition has extensive footnoting on the confusion, some of which I'll include here: "[The cognomen Verus] seems to have arisen through a confusion with his son, adopted by Antoninus Pius and, after his accession to the throne, called L. Aurelius Verus (HA, Had. XXII.11, n.1).
- It should be added that former to his adoption by Pius, this boy was called Lucius Ceionius Commodus (presumably 'the younger') and on his adoption was properly called L. Aelius Aurelius Commodus. It was not until Pius died and he ruled jointly with Marcus Annius Verus (known in the HA and sources as Marcus Antoninus) that he took the cognomen Verus. The reference to the Dutch page is wrong. This page refers to Lucius Aelius Verus, who became the co-emperor of Marcus Aurelius. Goodies 0:08, 1 Nov 2008 (UTC)
Era style
[edit]If you must add era tags, please keep the neutral "BCE" and "CE". I would prefer it in this form. Lupus Bellator (talk) 17:51, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- Personal preference isn't a sufficient reason to change from one convention to the other, per WP:ERA.Cúchullain t/c 19:29, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- The Plotinus example at WP:ERA permits the use of an era designation when one may be helpful to the reader. It should be up to those contributing content to decide which era style to use. Cynwolfe (talk) 22:20, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
